Gus Dur backs legislators intention to interpellate govt over UNSC resolution

Former president Abdurrahman Wahid alias Gus Dur said he supported the intention of 120 House of Representatives (DPR) members to exercise their interpellation right over the government`s support to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution to tighten sanctions on Iran over its uranium enrichment program.

"I back their (lawmakers`) intention to exercise their interpellation right over SBY`s (the president`s) stand in supporting the UNSC resolution on Iran because we have so far always supported Iran`s peaceful nuclear program," Gus Dur told reporters here on Tuesday.

Gus Dur said that so far, the president, the People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR), the House of Representatives (DPR), the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) and the people of Indonesia in general had been supporting Iran`s nuclear program for peaceful purposes.

Therefore, the lawmakers are proposing to exercise their rights to the interpellation over the president`s stand.

According to Gus Dur, the interpellation could be continued with impeachment if the president was proven to have violated the law. After all, Indonesia adopted a free and active foreign policy.

"Therefore, legislators are pleasing to go ahead with their interpellation because there are indications the government is committing more and more violations," Gus Dur said.

Meanwhile, a DPR member of the National Awakening Party (PKB) faction, Effendy Choirie, said a written proposal for the exercise of the interpellation right over the government`s support to the UNSC resolution on Iran was now circulating among House members and was already signed by 74 legislators. The number was expected to increase in the coming days, he said.

On March 24, fifteen members of the United Nations Security Council, including Indonesia, unanimously agreed to tighten sanctions on Iran after it refused to stop its uranium enrichment program.

They agreed to impose a ban on arms sales and expand a freeze on Iranian assets in response to the country`s uranium-enrichment activities which Tehran says are for peaceful purposes but which other countries contend are driven by military ambitions.
